🍎 iPad Mini is Apple’s Next BIG thing. With 170 Million iPads Sold, People Get it. Soon 90% of the PC users will Get it Too. Admittedly, we were among those PC users.
Eight years ago my 13 year old son Daniel convinced me to give an Apple’s Mac Book Pro a try. I was an over 20 year Windows PC person, from this perspective a "change" to Apple was "courageous."
Looking back, I had nothing to fear but fear itself, as Apple MACs are Easy to Use, and so are iPhones and iPads. The Competition is struggling to compete with Amazing Apple Quality combined with Apple Ease of Use, and Users and App Developers are on the "Same Page" making for a Better User Experience.
🍎 Recall that the iPad came to us in April, 2010, into an already crowded "tablet" marketplace, now 42 months later, there are 170 million iPads in circulation, that’s over 132,700 sold every Day for 3.5 years. The Internet trackers all agree that over 80% of all Internet Activity occurs with iPads.
🍎 Once Apple realized that the iPad was a huge winner, it put "all and on deck" to deliver an iPad on Par with typical PS computers and laptops. Apple has enhanced the processor to high-speed 64 bit, quad core, with one Billion components, matching 90% of the PC Users’ needs. Aside from some very specialized uses like Auto-Cad architectural design applications, most users want easy internet access, email, web browsing, viewing content, writing letters, papers, spreadsheets, most all academic and personal uses.
🍎 Over a few short years, Apple’s independent Application Development Community, 475,000 Apps have been developed specifically for the iPad. Many of the Apps, like about 30% of the Apps are Free. Most of the of the Apps that have a charge are at a cost of under $5. Notice at Left, there is a column of Categories; one of these categories is "Apps, Applications, iPad, iPhones " where I have reviewed and describe what I believe are some of the Best 100 Apps on my iPad and iPhone.
🍎 The new iPad Air will have much faster Wi-Fi than its predecessor, but not as fast as many had hoped. The new tablet doesn’t sport the new 802.11ac standard, even though Apple’s latest generation routers, PCs and laptops all support it. While Apple’s decision to eschew the standard in this round of mobile devices isn’t surprising, it will definitely delay the broader industry’s adoption of the new Wi-Fi technology.
🍎 What Apple is providing is a speed boost to the now thoroughly established 802.11n networking standard in the form of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) smart antenna technology. Like many Wi-Fi routers on the market the iPad Air has dual antennas, allowing it to wend two parallel paths over the unlicensed airwaves. The MIMO implementation will double the speeds at which the iPad can access Wi-Fi networks, according to Apple.
🍎 The display is the feature users spend the most time with. Apple has a 9.7-inch “Retina” display in its iPad Air and iPad Mini that shows 2048 pixels by 1536 pixels. That works out to 264 pixels per inch for the iPad Air and 326 pixels per inch for the iPad Mini, which is Significant because the higher the resolution and closer together the pixels are packed, the sharper and crisper the display appears. Since the iPad mini has the same number of pixels as the iPad Air, and with the iPad mini having a display 7.9" that is 1.8" smaller than the iPad Air, these same 3.1 million pixels are packed ever tighter, making the iPad mini’s resolution about equal to the iPhone 5S.
🍎 Both competing tablets have a slightly larger, 10.1-inch display, and there’s a big difference in resolution. While Sony’s screen is capable of 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels—a respectable resolution that matches high-definition video—Samsung’s screen beats both competitors. It has a resolution of 2560 pixels by 1600 pixels.
🍎 The iPad Air will ship with a battery that Apple says provides “up to 10 hours” of Web surfing on Wi-Fi, watching video and listening to music, its “Stamina mode” is said to shut down apps running in the background when the screen goes off, to extend the life of its battery. The capacity isn’t listed, is capable of 10 hours of video and 8 hours of Web browsing over Wi-Fi.
🍎 The Headline reads, "the iPad Mini is Apple’s Next BIG Thing" with some of the reasons described above. I pick the iPad mini, to be the Leader in the Number of Units perspective. I believe more folks will choose the somewhat smaller foot-print, now that the iPad Air and the New Mini are equivalent in internal capacities, speed, storage, and screen resolution, although the New iPad mini edges slightly higher in the resolution category.
