If you’re lucky, a few minutes of modern archaeological digging between couch cushions or underneath the Car seat will locate your lost artifacts. If you’re less fortunate, your misplaced item may require some more effort… Either way no problem with Tile.
🔘 Tile, the Company, began its “life” in 2012 with a successful SelfStarter financing campaign. This relatively small, about 1.45″ square by ¼” thin, (more precisely 5mm thin by 37mm) a square plastic “tag” device can be placed on a Key-Ring, or affixed to any item you want to “find” or keep “track” of. Tile can be easily attached to a Key-Ring, placed into a purse or wallet, stick to just about anything, from a laptop or place into one’s luggage, or hand a Tile onto your rear-view mirror of your Car.
🔘 Tile uses a precision Bluetooth LE signal (LE= Low Energy, an ultra-low power form of Bluetooth, delivering 100 to 200 foot range) combined with Tile’s companion App on your iPhone or iPad. You’re then able to track your item’s whereabouts, either the Tile or the iPhone, iPad, Purse, or your Car. If you cannot find your Car Keys with a Tile on the Ring, open up the Tile-App on your iPhone, and from the “List View” tap onto the item on your menu of devices that you are looking for. Once “tapped” the Tile Square will emit a “chirping” sound. It’s location may also be displayed on a Map… in the event you left you Keys at the Coffee Shop or the Hotel Registration Desk, or in your Parked Car…
🔘 If the Tile-equipped Item is somewhere in your house… and you can’t find it, you can tap “Find” within the Tile App menu, and the Object will emit a melody until you’ve successfully located it. The Tile App also shows you visually if you’re closer or further from the Tile when you’re in range, as you are walking around your home, office, grocery store, coffee shop, etc.
🔘 Tile’s Find-Me Range – The Tile generally has a Bluetooth-LE range of a 100, 150, 200 foot radius for locating your Tile tagged Keys; the Tile device operates using a new Bluetooth-LE signal. So if you leave Keys on the bus, you may be out of luck; Well, maybe not. If another Tile user happens to be near your Tile tagged Keys, the system can autonomously “piggy-back their Bluetooth-LE connection” to update your item’s location for you even if you are thousands of feet away. In fact, part of the promise of Tile is, as more people adopt Tile, every Tile user will receive more ubiquitous location private tracking. If there are no other Tile users near your Tile’d item, the App automatically records the location where your Tile was located moments before it went out-of-range.
🔘 Pet Collar with a Tile tag – Think about attaching a Tile to your Pet’s Collar using a Key-ring. If you Dog for example, occasionally runs off your yard, a Tile, may give you tracking details for bringing Pet home quickly, as you’ll know where the Pet is gallivanting, or at least you’ll know which direction your Pet was running, before it ran out of the Tile’s range. Although the Tile Company speaks of “finding things such as one’s personal possessions…” However, using a Tile for your Pets may be an added solution if your Pet gets loose in the neighborhood. A 100, 150 to 200 foot radius, or more of possible tracking, is better than none.
🔘 Speaking of Safety – Pin a Tile into your Youngster’s back-pocket. Nothing can be more frightening than one’s Child “running off” while you’re at a busy Shopping Mall, at a crowded Carnival, a Wooded Park or Camp Grounds. Best Case scenario – always have your youngsters at your side and in your view at all times. However, the Tile may give you an extra measure of safety by having a Tile attached to their back-pocket, in the event of the unimaginable. Again a 100 foot radius or more, of possible tracking, is better than running frantically in circles. If they wandered Out-of-Range, the Tile tag may show you the direction of were they were last know.
🔘 Tile’s Set-up is super-Simple. Download the free Tile App, press a hidden “e” button on the Tile Square, and place the Tile on top of your iPhone’s screen. The Tile App recognizes and ID of this Unique Tile. You can assign a name for this Tile, to a specific object (Keys, Luggage, LapTop Case, Purse, or your Car…) in the App. You may ID up to eight unique Tile Squares, giving each Tile a name (like “Bob’s Wallet” “Jim’s Keys” “Office Keys” “My Dog Fido” “Felix the Cat). You are able to photograph all tagged items, assigning the unique Photo to each Tile, using the Tile App. The App is very intuitive, easy to Set up, and Use.
🔘 Tile Used Conversely – Assuming you have your Keys with the Tile Square attached, double-press the “e” in the word Tile, (underneath the letter “e” is a button similar to the “home” button on your iPhone) and your iPhone will begin playing a familiar Tile musical-toon, to help you find your iPhone, or it will display its location on a Map, using the Map-View.
🔘 Register each Tile’s ID and Secured to a corresponding object. I chose to call one of the Tiles to be “JimW’s Keys” and notice the Tile List of objects: “JimW’s iPad Mini-2”, “JimW’s iPhone6+”, “JimW’s iPad Pro” you can visit the Tile App to check where any of the items are located on the Lost or Map views.
🔘 Tile’s Lithium Battery does not last Forever. The non-user-replaceable battery is designed and guaranteed to last about One Year, according to the company; You’ll get a reminder email to reTile a new Tile, about a year after you activated your Tile when new.
🔘 Prone to losing things at home or in the office, a device like Tile will certainly make life easier. I tossed a Tile in my briefcase, and basically forgot about it; When I couldn’t remember which room I’d left it last, Tile App will easily find it. Depending on the item(s) you tend to lose, the Tile’s form factor may still be a bit big (Tile is 1.5″ by ¼”) as it’s far too big to discreetly stick onto a pair of sunglasses, for example. Still, $25 is a small price to pay for the peace of mind that comes with being able to track down your misplaced Stuff for a year or longer.

🔘 Tile Technically Speaking – Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth-LE, is marketed as Bluetooth-Smart), a wireless personal area network technology designed and marketed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, aimed at novel applications such as TINLE, and devices for Healthcare, Fitness, Beacons, Security, and Home Entertainment industries. Compared to the Classic Bluetooth protocol, Bluetooth-Smart is intended to provide considerably reduced power consumption and cost, while maintaining a similar communication range of 100 feet to 300 feet.
🔘 Bluetooth LE Smart Technology Details – Operates in the same spectrum range (the 2.400 GHz to 2.4835 GHz ISM band) similar to Classic Bluetooth technology, but Bluetooth-LE uses a different set of channels. Instead of the Classic Bluetooth which uses 79, 1-MHz channels, Bluetooth-LE has 40, 2-MHz channels. Within each channel, data is transmitted using Gaussian Frequency Shift-Modulation, similar to Classic Bluetooth’s Basic bit-rate scheme. The bit rate is 1Mbit/s, and the maximum transmit power is 10 mW. Further details are given in Volume 6 Part A (Physical Layer Specification) of the Bluetooth Core Specification V4. Bluetooth-LE uses a technique of “Frequency-Hopping” to counteract potential narrow-band interference problems. Classic Bluetooth also uses frequency hopping but the spec-details differ; as a result, while both FCC and ETSI classify Bluetooth technology as an FHSS scheme, Bluetooth-LE is classified as a system using digital-modulation techniques, otherwise knows as direct-sequence spread spectrum.
