🍎 Slated to be released in mid-October, the next generation iPhone 6 debut could be pushed back (but I doubt it) as a result of a dust explosion Saturday at a local Car Hubcap Factory in the city of Kunshan, which killed 75 people and injured 186.
🍎 This tragedy triggered a Chinese nationwide halt in metal polishing plants, over the weekend as the Chinese State Administration of Work Safety sent officials to inspect factories in the local area that also polish metal, including Foxconn. FOXconn is a major factory in Apple’s supply chain, according to TechWeb.
🍎 iPhone NEWS BULLETIN ~ Major Explosion at China Plant may Delay Release Date for iPhone 6 ~ as Reported by the NY Post at 2:38am on Aug 5th, 2014
🍎 The good news is that in the first place FOXconn is a relatively huge Chinese Factory that employs 500,000 just to assemble Apple iPhones and iPads; secondly Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook is a master of fabrication supply-lines, many years for Apple and likewise at Hewlett Packard. Accordingly, Apple has many supply-lines in operation and as back-up to protect its valued products and the release of new products.
🍎 Recall that Apple has 550,000,000 iPhones and 225,000,000 iPads in current circulation. This represents a lot of Displays, Batteries, Buttons, Cases, Processor Boards, etc. The assembly of these devices are not in the hand of any One source. Its been reported that Apple ordered around 90,000,000 iPhone 6 and iPhone Air handsets for its initial order for 2014 sales.
🍎 Apple, for security reasons and for good corporate governance, Apple does NOT permit its destiny to be in the hands of any outsider, much less only ONE assembler or fabricator
🍎 Assembly of Apple products is distributed enterprise-wise, to prevent any product interruptions due to the failure or fumbling of any single Contractor’s receipt of “all the business”
🍎 Assembly of Apple products is also distributed Geography, nationally or internationally, to prevent any product interruptions due to political issues with local governments, war, personnel shortages, worker strikes, talent issues, taxation, currency, etc.
🍎 Back to this Fire/Explosion. The metal body of the popular iPhone is made of an aluminum alloy, which is polished at factories such as Foxconn. However this incident did not occur at FOXconn’s plant. As a chemist, polishing requires the use of abrasives, buffing devices and results in high levels of “dust and debris.” Metallic Dust when mixed with other dust materials Plus Oxygen, can literally be Explosive if there is Not sufficient Ventilation of the work areas.
🍎 Apple is expected to announce the new iPhone 6 and its release date in September. IMHO, being aware of Apple’s corporate culture for safety good corporate governance, Apple will not be delaying the iPhone 6 because Chinese Investigators are examining FOXconn and other plants due to the above reported incident.

🍎 BEIJING — Sixty-eight people were killed and nearly 200 others injured, most with severe burns, after an explosion Saturday at an automotive parts factory in eastern China that supplies General Motors, officials said. It was China’s most serious industrial disaster since a fire at a poultry plant killed 119 people in June last year.
🍎 Saturday morning’s explosion occurred when more than 200 workers were on the site of the factory, which is in an industrial zone in the city of Kunshan, officials from the city said at a news conference televised by state broadcaster CCTV. Kunshan, in Jiangsu province, is about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) southeast of Beijing.
🍎 CCTV showed footage shot by residents of large plumes of thick, black smoke rising from the plant. Several firefighting trucks were shown in the factory compound. News websites posted photos showing survivors or those who were killed being lifted onto the back of large trucks, their bodies black, presumably from burns or soot.
🍎 Some survivors were seen sitting on wooden cargo platforms on the road outside the factory or being carried into ambulances, their clothes apparently burned off and their skin exposed.
The explosion occurred at 7:37 a.m. at a workshop in the factory, which polishes wheel hubs. Rescuers pulled out 44 bodies at the site, while 24 other people died at a hospital, officials said. At least 187 people were injured.
🍎 More than 120 of the injured were sent to hospitals in Kunshan and the nearby city of Suzhou. Burn experts from a Shanghai hospital arrived in Kunshan to help, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
🍎 A preliminary investigation showed that the blast was likely a dust explosion, Xinhua said. The factory is operated by the Kunshan Zhongrong Metal Products Company, which according to its website was set up in 1998 and has a registered capital of $8.8 million. Its core business is electroplating aluminum alloy wheel hubs, and it supplies GM and other companies, [however, not Apple] the website said.
🍎 In a statement, GM confirmed that Zhongrong is part of its network of suppliers. “We can confirm Zhongrong is a supplier to GM’s global supplier Dicastal,” the statement said.

As many of my friends, family and students know, I am an avid iPad adopter since its release April, 2010. With Apple’s release of the Retina-Display iPad Mini, (I sold my iPad 4 to Gazelle.com) applied the proceeds to purchase the "mini" with 128GB of Storage, AT&T connectivity, plus added Logitech’s UltraThin Keyboard Cover, and an ACME MADE San Francisco rubberized thin slip-over protective case. This thin package actually fits into my trousers pocket.
