π Apple’s iPad, the Original was dismissed by the Critics as merely a larger iPhone, Apple shouldn’t even try to enter the already crowded Tablet marketplace, and if Apple is Lucky maybe 5 million iPads be sold per year. Eventually, over these 5 years, the iPad is in classrooms and businesses around the world, serving not only as a media machine but a full-fledged computer-replacement.
π Apple iPad reinvented the Tablet, and started a revolution in the Tablet industry. Consumers now have choices from hundreds of Apple, Android, and Windows tablets. We can all go “on and on” about which Tablet is the best today. However, there’s no forgetting that the iPad now having sold over 260,000,000 units through Q1 2015, is in the midst of something incredibly special, that resulted in more choice for everyone. Although the number of iPad units sold in recent months has decreased by 15%, this is largely due to Apple’s release of the large-display iPhone 6 Plus with its 5.5″ display, relatively close to the iPad Mini’s display of 7.9″ the iPad Air 2’s display is 9.7″
π Apple original iPad configured with Wi-Fi only, announced January 27, 2010, and launched on April 3, 2010. The iPad with Cellular 3G connectivity was released a few weeks later on April 30. Of course, I pre-ordered the original iPad with 3G and 64 GB of storage, and received it via UPS directly from Apple’s factory in China. The original iPad was loaded with 256MB of RAM, a Cortex A8 processor with a clock-speed of 1GHz, a 9.7″ display and a 1024 x 768-pixel resolution (786,432 pixel display), and was a 0.50″ thick, or 12.7mm.
π Apple’s current model is the iPad Air 2, by comparison is packed with a much sharper 2048 x 1536-pixel resolution (3,145,728 pixel display, literally 4x the original iPad’s display), an A8X chip, 2GB of RAM (8x that of the original iPad), an 8-megapixel camera, a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera, support for the latest Wi-Fi and LTE networks, a fingerprint reader, up to 128GB of storage and, of course, iOS 8 which offers much more than the original software on the first iPad. Put all of this hardware capability into the iPad Air 2 is literally half the thickness of the original iPad, measuring only 0.24″ thick, or 6.1mm.
π Apple is expected to release (the rumored) iPad Pro, which will usher in a new age of iOS iPads and competitive tablets, with a sharp focus on productivity, multitasking, textbook replacement, with the largest 12″ display on any iPad as of today. Question: where will the iPad and the Tablet Industry be five years from now, when the iPad has been on the market for 10 years?
π iPad Pro and the Evolution of the Tablet Industry. Its been my position that the iPad (the tablet products) will eventually “merge” with the current Macbook Air (the laptop products) hardware-wise and operating system-wise. Imagine a high powered Macbook Air with the touch-screen 3.1 million pixel display of the currently available in the iPad Air 2. Apple continues to insist that their MacBooks will NEVER have a touch screen… Hogwash, the marketplace will push Apple and the Industry to touch-screen laptops.
π I have a MacBook Pro and the iPad Air 2, switching constantly between the two; however, I write all my WordPress articles on the iPad, because of its ease of use, and ease of creating the Graphics you see in these articles. I can easily imagine the MacBook Pro collecting lots of dust, once the iPad PRO comes to market mid-2015, presumably.
π The iPad PRO will seriously challenge the Laptop industry, assuming Apple packs it with enough POWER and SPEED, coupled with a 10 HOUR Battery. We’re assuming the wireless connectivity package will be the same as current iPads enjoy. There is a new rumor that the iPad PRO may have two PORTS, perhaps the LIGHTNING port plus Apple’s new USB-C that’s packed with their new MacBook release. My only major complaints about the iOS system are (A) the lack of the File System with Drag-and-Drop of files to Folders and Directories, and (B) Naming and Search capabilities for Photos, users should be able to Name a Image and be able Search for it.
Apple Launches iPad Press Release
Magical & Revolutionary Device at an Unbelievable Price
SAN FRANCISCO—January 27, 2010—Apple® today introduced iPad, a revolutionary device for browsing the web, reading and sending email, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing games, reading e-books and much more. iPad’s responsive high-resolution Multi-Touch™ display lets users physically interact with applications and content. iPad is just 0.5 inches thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds— thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook. iPad includes 12 new innovative apps designed especially for the iPad, and will run almost all of the over 140,000 apps in the App Store. iPad will be available in late March starting at the breakthrough price of just $499.
“iPad is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPad creates and defines an entirely new category of devices that will connect users with their apps and content in a much more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”
iPad features 12 next-generation Multi-Touch applications. Every app works in both portrait and landscape, automatically animating between views as the user rotates iPad in any direction. The precise Multi-Touch interface makes surfing the web on iPad an entirely new experience, dramatically more interactive and intimate than on a computer. Reading and sending email is fun and easy on iPad’s large screen and almost full-size “soft” keyboard. Import photos from a Mac®, PC or digital camera, see them organized as albums, and enjoy and share them using iPad’s elegant slideshows. Watch movies, TV shows and YouTube, all in HD or flip through pages of an e-book you downloaded from Apple’s new iBookstore while listening to your music collection.
iPad runs almost all of the over 140,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®. The iTunes® Store gives you access to the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store with a catalog of over 11 million songs, over 50,000 TV episodes and over 8,000 films including over 2,000 in stunning high definition video. Apple also announced the new iBooks app for iPad, which includes Apple’s new iBookstore, the best way to browse, buy and read books on a mobile device. The iBookstore will feature books from major and independent publishers.
Apple also introduced a new version of iWork® for iPad, the first desktop-class productivity suite designed specifically for Multi-Touch. With Pages®, Keynote® and Numbers® you can create beautifully formatted documents, stunning presentations with animations and transitions, and spreadsheets with charts, functions and formulas. The three apps will be available separately through the App Store for $9.99 each.
iPad syncs with iTunes just like the iPhone and iPod touch, using the standard Apple 30-pin to USB cable, so you can sync all of your contacts, photos, music, movies, TV shows, applications and more from your Mac or PC. All the apps and content you download on iPad from the App Store, iTunes Store and iBookstore will be automatically synced to your iTunes library the next time you connect with your computer.
iPad’s brilliant 9.7-inch, LED-backlit display features IPS technology to deliver crisp, clear images and consistent color with an ultra-wide 178 degree viewing angle. The highly precise, capacitive Multi-Touch display is amazingly accurate and responsive whether scrolling web pages or playing games. The intelligent soft keyboard pioneered on iPhone takes advantage of iPad’s larger display to offer an almost full-size soft keyboard. iPad also connects to the new iPad Keyboard Dock with a full-size traditional keyboard.
iPad is powered by A4, Apple’s next-generation system-on-a-chip. Designed by Apple, the new A4 chip provides exceptional processor and graphics performance along with long battery life of up to 10 hours.* Apple’s advanced chemistry and Adaptive Charging technology deliver up to 1,000 charge cycles without a significant decrease in battery capacity over a typical five year lifespan.**
iPad comes in two versions—one with Wi-Fi and the other with both Wi-Fi and 3G. iPad includes the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi, and the 3G versions support speeds up to 7.2 Mbps on HSDPA networks. Apple and AT&T announced breakthrough 3G pre-paid data plans for iPad with easy, on-device activation and management.
Continuing Apple’s dedication to designing and creating environmentally responsible products, each iPad enclosure is made of highly recyclable aluminum and comes standard with energy-efficient LED-backlit displays that are mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass. iPad contains no brominated flame retardants and is completely PVC-free.
Apple today released a new Software Development Kit (SDK) for iPad, so developers can create amazing new applications designed to take advantage of iPad’s capabilities. The SDK includes a simulator that lets developers test and debug their iPad apps on a Mac, and also lets developers create Universal Applications that run on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
Pricing & Availability
iPad will be available in late March worldwide for a suggested retail price of $499 (US) for the 16GB model, $599 (US) for the 32GB model, $699 (US) for the 64GB model. The Wi-Fi + 3G models of iPad will be available in April in the US and selected countries for a suggested retail price of $629 (US) for the 16GB model, $729 (US) for the 32GB model and $829 (US) for the 64GB model. iPad will be sold in the US through the Apple Store® (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers. International pricing and worldwide availability will be announced at a later date. iBookstore will be available in the US at launch.
*Apple tested wireless battery life by browsing web pages and receiving email over an AirPort® network, never letting the system go to sleep during the test, and keeping the display at half brightness. This is a typical scenario of use on the go, resulting in a battery performance number that is very relevant to mobile users.
**A properly maintained iPad battery is designed to retain 80 percent or more of its original capacity during a lifespan of up to 1,000 recharge cycles. Battery life and charge cycles vary by use and settings.
Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone.
Apple Facial Recognition – Unlock your iPhone with a Selfie Photo
π Apple received a Facal Recognition US Patent Award on March 31, 2015. The patent was originally “Applied For” on March 16, 2011, over 4 years ago. Apple continues to Innovate. Taking a SELFIE is quite an amazing technique for identifying the iPhone user, that method being backed up with the present-day Finger-Print sensor technology, and both these methods being backed up with password protection.
π Apple was awarded US Patent No. 8,994,499 titled “Locking and Unlocking a Mobile Device using Facial Recognition,” and would let users unlock their devices by taking a photo of the user’s face to prove and verify that the User is Authorized Owner. It’s a brilliant biometric alternative to Apple’s Finger-Print Touch ID, Apple’s fingerprint scanner. If these two Authentication Systems fail to recognize the Authorized User, the fail-safe is the traditional PassWord.
π Apple’s Facial Recognition Technology when implemented would be the iPhone’s Primary authentication-method for UnLocking one’s smartphone. Not only will the facial recognition algorithm unlock the iPhone, the biometric security system will continue to use the iPhone’s cameras to “monitor the users ambient surroundings” in attempt to “Visualize the User’s Face” thereby maintaining an “unlocked status” for the iPhone. In the event the Facial Recognition System fails to “Visualize the User” within a predetermined time interval, the system will Auto-Lock in attempt to protect the user’s confidential data and personal information.
π Apple’s Facial Recognition Patent, an interesting characteristic, the facial recognition system directs the iPhone to continue to secure your device even after it has been unlocked. One’s iPhone for example with this Facial Recognition technology Enabled, the iPhone would continue to periodically Capture “Selfie” images of the authorized user. If the authorized User dies not appear in the subsequent imaging, the iPhone will automatically re-Lock, blocking unauthorized intruders from accessing the device’s contents.
π As with all Patents, there’s no “guarantee” Apple will implement this technology. Apple has receive thousands Patent Awards in recent years whose unique Technology and Intellectual Property, worthy of a Patent, have not been utilized in current devices. Occasionally Apple files for Patents for technology and designs as a precautionary tool, intended to block competitors from using these unique inventions. Its well known that the smartphone and portable computing industries are increasingly looking to replace the traditional passwords, as we are all inundated with annoying passwords and routine changing of passwords. Apples notion of selfie-secured iPhones seems like a surprisingly plausible idea.
π The Result, iPhone Passwords and Fingerprint Scans may soon be obsolete. Apple has been granted a patent that lets users unlock and secure their phones with a simple biometric Selfie.

As many of my friends, family and students know, I am an avid iPad adopter since its release April, 2010. With Apple’s release of the Retina-Display iPad Air 2, (I sold iPad 4 to Gazelle.com) applied the proceeds to purchase the "mini" with 128GB of Storage, AT&T connectivity, plus added Logitech’s UltraThin Keyboard Cover, and a DECODED natural leather thin slip-over protective case.
