🍎 Fragmentation a Way of Life at Android ~ Android’s KitKat released Sept 3rd, 2013 has only reached 1% of Android devices ~ Apple’s iOS 7 released Sept 18, 2013 has been installed on 74% of all iPhones.
🍎 Android fragmentation might be on a modest decline, but it’s hard not to notice Android Fragmentation when comparing numbers like these. According to the Web and Analytics Advertising firm Chitika, Apple’s iOS 7 now powers 74.1% of North American iPhones. Google’s Android 4.4 KitKat, on the other hand, is only running on 1.1% of Android devices, according to Google’s developer statistics.
🍎 Apple’s iOS 7 powers the vast majority of Apple’s iPhones. To determine iOS distribution, Chitika looked at literally tens of millions of North American Ad impressions on iOS devices between October 25 and November 18. While it might not be an exact number from Apple, it’s a very good indication statistically of how widespread iOS 7 adoption is throughout North America. Apple’s iOS 7 adoption on the iPad is similarly at 63.8% according to Chitika.
🍎 The Primary reason Apple Users quickly migrate to each New iOS update, for example from iOS6 to iOS7, is the Apple iPhones and iPads ALL work perfectly, with the Operating System and with ALL the APPs. There have been a few isolated “glitches” however, Apple is very quick in resolving the issue, like in a few days. Apple generally issues 4 to 8 Beta versions to 100,000+ engineers in their independent “Developer Community” for testing. Each of these beta versions run for about 10-14 days, during which time, the Developers respond back to Apple’s operating system software engineers, making notice of any issues they discover. Apple then edits the iOS beta code, makes improvements and issues the next beta, for testing by the Developer Community. Recent versions of Apple’s iOS 5,6,7 require about 100 days of this stepped beta process, before the iOS is released to the general population of Apple’s 500,000,000 or so iPhones and iPads.
🍎 One Asks, Why doesn’t Android software engineers do what Apple does with their iDevices. The short-answer, Android has over 11,800 unique devices in their population of users.
🍎 Apple has, lets count them, iPhone 3, 4, 4s, 5, 5s, iPad 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, iPad mini 1 and 2. The total number of unique Apple iOS devices is 12. Android with its Open Architecture has over 11,800 devices.
🍎 These Figures are in stark contrast to Android’s non-Adoption rates. According to Google, KitKat, Android’s newest OS release, released several weeks before Apple’s iOS7 release date, is only running on 1.10% of Android devices. Jelly Bean (versions 4.1 – 4.3) makes up the largest segment of Android users, running on 54.5% of Android devices. What is very surprising, and a little unsettling for App Developers, is Gingerbread. Gingerbread is over two years old at this point, and is still running on 24.1% of the Android phones and tablets out there. There are several reasons why is Gingerbread still in all these Android devices.
(A) The device configurations, memory level , Bus-speed, Processor capacity is capable of running Gingerbread, however will not run with the Newer operating systems that require more speed and capacity
(B) Android device Carriers that operate the older devices using Gingerbread, will not operate properly if the OS is upgraded to a newer OS, causing forced Fragmentation
(C) App Developers designed their Apps to operate on Gingerbread coupled to the device configurations, memory level , Bus-speed, and Processor capacities. Changing the OS will cause many of these APPs to not operate properly or “freeze.”
🍎 FRAGMENTATION. There are many reasons for the Android Fragmentation of OS adoption. Android’s “open architecture” is exciting for “tinkerers” but a huge headache for Android OEM Manufacturers, Cellular Carriers, and APP Developers. At the present time there are over 11,800 unique Android designs, for the 600 million or so Android devices in circulation. Each of these Android designs have differing memory configurations and constraints manufactured, added Carrier software overlays, where each Carrier may have a different Overlay to make its Android devices operate, all which tend to delay the update process, if not shut it down completely. Google pledged to fight Android fragmentation with the release of KitKat, writing the software to support devices with older specs. But Google-Android also isn’t providing an update to its own Galaxy Nexus device, which begins a New level of Fragmentation right from the starting-gate.
🍎 Over 50% of iPhone 5C Buyers migrated from Android smartphones, according to a recent Kantar WorldPanel ComTech report. Elsewhere, in Japan Apple Won 76% of all October, 2013 Smartphone Sales, Kantar Says.
🍎 The iPhone 5c for Apple, the mid-range iOS smartphone is quiet a success for Apple. After all, the iPhone 5C sold 3 Million units in its opening weekend. The iPhone 5S sold 6 Million units that weekend too. The latest figures suggest that Apple’s flagship iPhone 5s is outselling the iPhone 5c by a ratio of 66%:33%. The iPhone 5c has a strategic purpose in Apple’s lineup. The iPhone 5c represents a Huge threat to Android and is a cause for serious concern for Android partners such as HTC, Samsung, and LG.
🍎 Kantar WorldPanel ComTech has released interesting numbers behind sales of the iPhone 5C. According to the research, those who are buying the iPhone 5c have never owned an iPhone. These first-time iPhone buyers are switching from Android to Apple’s iPhone 5C, showing that the 5C’s appeal is to a whole new generation of iOS users. Recall according to Tim Cook the iPhone 5C is a replacement for the iPhone 5.

🍎 Apple Won 76% of Japan October Smartphone Sales, Kantar Says. Apple sold three of every four smartphones in Japan last month after the country’s largest carrier, NTT Docomo began carrying the iPhone, according to a market researcher. Apple, which released new iPhone 5S and 5C models in September, won 76% of Japanese smartphone sales last month, market researcher Kantar Worldpanel ComTech said yesterday.
🍎 Fragmentation is significant part of the reason that the iPhone is receiving large numbers of Android users. When people talk about Android’s “fragmentation” problem, what they are referring to is the fact that the majority of the 11,800 Android devices are NOT running the most current version of Google’s mobile operating system.
🍎 The reason this is a big deal is because any ecosystem is only as strong as how many devices are running the most Current Version of the operating system; older versions of an operating systems
(A) Androids, old versions are significantly more vulnerable to malicious exploits that have been patched in more recent versions, and
(B) Android Apps running on Old Android Operating Systems can’t make use of newer Android features.
🍎 A new chart released by Fidlee shows exactly how bad Google’s Android fragmentation problem has become. Although iOS 7 runs on almost all Apple iPhones released in the last five years, there are few Android devices that are supported by the most recent version of Android just two years after they are purchased.
🍎 Android Fragmentation Graphic. Hard to believe, but there are currently 11,868 unique Android Devices, each represented by a colored-block representing pieces of Android Operating System Puzzle, that all the Carriers and Smart Phone makers, that exist currently have to deal with. Imagine an App Developer deciding which version of the Android operating system, they should focus their attention on, for their new Amazing App Idea. Then compare this chart with the simple Apple Pie Chart, where 93% of the now 700 million iPhone, iOS users are on iOS6.
🍎 For Android users, watch out you wished for namely, “the open App architecture.” These folks are damned by their own desires; When a new Android OS is made available to them, a super-majority of these users, like 90%, are “fearful of lousing up” their devices, because of possible APP or Hardware conflicts, with the new operating system update. This is also evidenced by the fact that only 10.2% of Android Users are using the current Jelly Bean iOS version, where as over 550 million, over 90% of Apple users, are using the most current iOS6 and iOS 7. These figures are Nov 2013 extrapolations.
🍎 Personally, the last time I felt these adverse technology feelings, was when I was a WINDOWS personal computer user for some 20+ years, 1984 through 2004. I was known to wait a year or more, before I would migrate any of our computers to a new Windows OS. As a former Bank manager, memos when to our IT folks, instructing them not to upgrade to quickly; The theory being, let everyone else be the guinea-pigs suffering with buggy new Windows OS releases. Apparently, Android users are suffering from the similar buggy Hardware and Software upgrade issues, I used to face with Windows. Notice in the graphics below:

🍎 In 2005, 7 years ago, I gave up on WINDOWS completely, after repeated appeals by my 13 year old son, Daniel; We invested in three APPLE MAC Book Pro laptops, and never looked back, donating 3 of our 4 Widows PS computers to our Church. I retained one Windows PC for the transition. Apple’s OS operating system releases, Mountain Lion, Tiger, whatever, were all very reliable updates; therefor most of the MAC users migrated almost immediately, to take advantage of all the nifty functional, stability, and security improvements their new OS would offer.

As many of my friends, family and students know, I am an avid iPad adopter since its release mid-year 2010. With Apple’s release of the Retina-Display iPad Mini, I will be changing to it soon with 128GB of Storage and Logitech’s UltraThin Keyboard Cover; however, the WiFi only model. My thought is there are so many WiFi zones available these days, investing in the $130 LTE Cellular chipset upgrade is mitigated by my iPhone 5S with its "HOT SPOT" capability. Therefore, if I have migrated into non-WiFi area, or I desire a more Secure Internet Connection, its very easy to Activate my iPhone’s Hot Spot, which serves as a mini-router, accepting up to 5 WiFi enabled devices, for internet connectivity.
