๐ Apple Sells iPads to Every Student in LA School District 640,000 iPads, a $433,920,000 deal. 44,247 iPads will be shipped to students in 2013 ~ By the End of 2014 the balance of the 640,000 LA Students will have an iPad ~ iPads are truly Magical and Educators Know it. The L.A. Unified School District (2nd largest school district in the USA) has awarded Apple (June 18, 2013) with a $30 million initial shipment in 2013, another 595,753 Apple iPads to be shipped to every student the LA School District serves in 2014.
๐ To place the LA County iPad deal in perspective, Apple is selling on average 16,000,000 iPads every 90 days, which equates to 177,778 iPads sold and delivered to customers every DAY. Although this LA County School System deal is very important to Apple, and rest assured everyone competing was salivating for this one, in perspective this transaction represents only about 3.6 Days’ of Apple iPad current sales rate.
๐ All the major players in the tablet arena like Microsoft, Samsung and others competed for this relationship. Its clear that the iPad is replacing the the traditional PC in Education.
๐ Think about it, over 44,000 iPads in one neat transaction. To give sense to the order of magnitude for this size iPad Sale order, Apple sells on average 178,000 iPads every Day world-wide. Although 44,000 iPads is a very attractive package, that Apple is thrilled to receive, this order represents only 6 hours of iPad production run-time, quite amazing.
๐ Digital textbooks for the L.A. program will be provided by publisher Pearson Education, Boston, the largest Educational Publisher. District officials believe the program will help them save money over time by negating the need to buy anymore traditional paper-based textbooks.
๐ Remember my remarks many months ago, Paper is OVER. No more Heavy Paper Text Books will be carried-around by all 640,000 students of the LA County School System. Libraries in time will eventually become Museums for Printed Books, Volumes, and Journals, rather than a place for the masses to read and perform research. All over the USA, actual foot-traffic has been reduced by 40%, likely because Educators, Students, and the Public at large, are using iPads and traditional PCs to do their R&R, reading and research.
๐ The LA County Unified School district considered offers from Apple’s rivals for this huge program, including Samsung and Microsoft; However ultimately LA County Schools went with the Apple iPad.
๐ Adding Insult to Injury, Microsoft pushed for the school district to Pilot more than one device and vendor to include its Windows hardware in the mix; However, the LA County District staff felt the iPad was a clearly Superior Product, and… “it wouldn’t be fair to require some students to use a lesser quality device….”
๐ Research has shown and major iPad purchase transactions such as this, are repeatedly demonstrating that Apple’s iPad is definitively Replacing Sales of traditional PCs in Education. One pilot program in Idaho dubbed “iSchool Campus” has earned rave reviews, while an initiative at Arkansas State University will require all incoming students to have an iPad as of this fall. These iPad initiatives are spreading all over the USA in Elementary and Secondary Schools, and of course College Campuses, Law Schools, Medical Schools, and Hosptials.
๐ Recall last month it was reported that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoฤan visited Apple headquarters, as Turkey is seriously looking to buy just over 10 Million iPads very soon for its initial $5 Billion purchase, representing about 8 weeks of Apple’s iPad production run-time.
๐ An ancillary benefit for Apple, a very important benefit, with the adoption of iPads for leaning is that, all these students will become very familiar with Apple’s operating system at an early age, the iPad being one of Apple’s key products. Parents may also obtain iPads too for after-school, homework assignments. What a terrific venue for the Introduction of Apple’s Magical device.
๐ Education is a wonderful purpose for the iPad, as "Learning Assessments" have shown. Since the iPad is co very easy to use, this Device doesn’t get in the way for learning. It seems that the iPad is replacing typical Windows computer stations, that once dominated Public Education classrooms.
๐ According to the LA Times, The Board of Education voted 6 to 0 on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, to approve the contract after hearing senior staff laud Apple’s product as both the best in quality and the least expensive option that met the district’s specifications.
๐ Tuesday’s vote authorized an iPad rollout at all 47 LA campuses. However, by choosing Apple as the sole vendor, the district also made a de facto commitment to spend hundreds of millions of dollars with the Cupertino, California based digital giant over the next two years.
๐ The tablet computer by Apple “received the highest scoring by the students and the teachers,” who took part in testing different devices, said Deputy Supt. Jaime Aquino. Board members Steve Zimmer and Richard Vladovic expressed the most concerns. Zimmer questioned whether devices other than tablets were more fitting for high school students. Vladovic worried that the board lacked detailed information on costs. "This is one of the most high-profile contracts this board will ever approve,” Zimmer said. This contract is “as big as they come.” "I can sleep tonight with my conscience clear," Aquino responded, "that you did the right thing for kids.”
๐ The LA School District is paying $678 for each of the 44,247 iPads, a higher price than the iPads are available in stores, because the iPads will all be pre-loaded with a full suite of educational software. The price does not include bluetooth keyboards, which may be necessary, depending on the class being taught.
๐ Vladovic noted that he had dropped and broken two iPads and that students also would break them. The three-year warranty includes free replacement machines up to 5% of the value of the purchase, he was told.
☔ Microsoft representatives urged the Board to pilot more than one product and not to rely on one platform. Doing so could cut off the district from future price reductions and innovations, said Robyn Hines, senior director of state government affairs for Microsoft. Hines also noted that more businesses still use Microsoft platforms, and that students should be exposed to machines they will encounter in the workplace. "A one-size-fits-all approach” would limit important options, she said.
๐ District staff countered that Apple offered the superior product and some students shouldn’t have to use a lesser quality tablet. They also said that students and teachers often change schools and should not have to learn a different platform.
๐ Officials said they opposed a delay in part because new state and national tests will be taken on computers, and they don’t want Los Angeles students to lack the necessary experience with them. Teachers union president Warren Fletcher urged a delay in the vote and said resources should be focused on rehiring needed staff. Chief Strategy Officer Matt Hill also noted that the funding is from facility bonds, which can’t be used to hire regular school staff. The teachers union also criticized L.A. schools Supt. John Deasy for appearing in an Apple promotional video prior to the bidding process. This source of funding also has been controversial because school bonds are typically used for construction and paid-off over decades.
๐ Deasy said he abstained from involvement in the decision, not because of the video but because he owned a small amount of stock in Apple. He left the board room prior to consideration of the contract for the same reason. Board member Bennett Kayser and general counsel David Holmquist also left the chamber because they own some stock in Apple.
๐ Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in the U.S. state of California. It is the 2nd largest public school district in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population. During the 2011-2012 school year, LAUSD served 662,140 students, and had 45,473 teachers and 38,494 other employees, as the second largest employer in Los Angeles County, the county government being the largest employer.
๐ The total school district budget for 2009-2010 is $7.3 billion. In enrollment breakdown by ethnic group, 72.3% of its students were some form of Hispanic and 9.6% of its students were African American. White American students comprise 10.1% of the student population, while Asian American students comprise 4%; students of Filipino origin form 2.1% of the student population. Native Americans and Pacific Islanders together are less than 1%.
๐ Arkansas State first considered using the iPad when its teaching program outgrew the school’s existing Mac lab, where student teachers were learning to integrate technology into their instruction. Dr. Gina Hogue, Ph.D., spoke with AppleInsider about ASU’s adoption of the iPad, and how the university hopes to improve its education by requiring all students to have one.
๐ Starting in this year’s fall semester, all members of the incoming first-year class for Arkansas State will either have an iPad upon arriving on campus or will be required to procure one shortly thereafter. The requirement is part of the university’s iPad Initiative, the motto for which is "Learn on the move."
๐ Hogue, the University’s Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Services, said the initiative has its roots in Arkansas State’s Teaching Methods course. Instructors would send student teachers out into the field equipped with an iPad, allowing administrators greater freedom in monitoring teachers’ progress.
