iPhone 6 to have a 4.5″ or 5.0″ screen, How does this Compute? Amid rumors of a significantly larger “iPhone Math”, Instapaper developer Marco Arment has spent time developing some speculation and a few mockups showing how Apple could achieve an iPhone with a nearly 5-inch without disrupting the existing app ecosystem. The recently rumored, larger-screened “iPhone Math”, or more likely “iPhone Plus”, is plausible as an additional model (not a replacement) alongside the 4″ iPhone. And there’s a chance that it may have a 4.94″, 16:9 screen.
The latest “imagery” of what the new iPhone-6 may look like eliminates Apple’s HOME button… which is quite an elimination, in the absence of how the iPhone’s functions would be changed, without its HOME button. Some theorists moved it to the side edge well below the volume buttons.
The theory is easy to understand: perform John Gruber’s Mini-predicting math backwards. The iPad Mini uses iPhone 3GS-density screens for the “mini” resolution. What if an iPhone Plus used Retina iPad screens with iPhone 5 resolution, keeping the rest of the design sized like an iPhone 5.
Details of the reverse-math, arriving at a larger screen for the “next” iPhone.
iPhone 5 has a 4″ screen and is selling 50 million units/quarter.
iPhone 6 may have a 5″ screen, does this compute ?
The iPad with its 9.7″ display was studied, even to the point that Apple Executives said “no other Pad screen-size would work.” However, be that as it may, the FOLKs, you and me, tens of millions of us, want a more portable iPad. And as you likely have heard reported, Apple is straining to make the the “min” iPads fast enough.
My guess, a 5″ screen-sized iPhone 6, will sell like crazy large numbers, just as the iPad-mini has, as many, many folks want a bigger screen on their SmartPhones, even if they need three hands to hold it…
Suggestion for Apple: Put aside the notion that ALL the iPhone models must be usable with one hand, with one’s thumb. If I were in the Apple Design chain of command, which of course I’m not, I’d have THREE iPhone sizes, a new Mini version, the Apple Standard, and a new Maxi versions. This would give a terrific broad choice of screen sizes to meet almost everyone’s desires; makes no sense for Apple to refuse all those folks that are buying Galaxy and Note Samsung devices; I’ll bet, that once Apple releases a 5″ screen iPhone, over 50% of folks desiring these larger devices will come to Apple.
Cost aside, figuratively speaking, I want three things:
(A) Bigger iPhone display. (B) Retinal display resolution on the iPad-mini. (C) iPad-Maxi Pro, 12″ iPad Laptop.
Here is the MATH…
One way Apple could get closer to a 5″ display is by increasing the physical size of the current iPhone 5 display while maintaining the 1136×640 pixel “dimension.” The result would spreading all the pixels a bit further apart, resulting in a slightly lower pixel density.
At 4″ diagonally, the 1136×640 pixel display of the iPhone 5 has the same pixel density as the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, which is 326ppi, for the 727,000 pixels. If the Apple engineer stretched, spread out the same 727,000 pixels to a 5″ diagonal screen, the resultant PPI, the pixels per inch, decreases to 264ppi, an almost indistinguishable change visually speaking. Incidentally the pixel density of the Retina display of the iPad v3, is exactly 264ppi. Is this by coincidence too, or by design?
I don’t believe in “coincidences” particularly anything Apple does. EVERYTHING Apple does, they do on purpose. Making Apple devices easy to use, making Apple devices with incredible physical quality, the buttons, their placement, their size, thickness, diameter, the materials, its finish, every minute detail is VERY much “on purpose.” Multiply this discipline and effort for every component, software interface, user stroke, iOS code line… everything is analyzed, studied, tested, retested… to the “N”th degree…
Another “coincidence”… the newly released iPad-mini’s display resolution, matches the density, 163 ppi, of the iPhones 3G and 3GS.
One More Thing… Being full of suggestions, lets assume Apple does deliver the products discussed above. So whats next in the pipeline… Lets create a iPad-Pro which would “look like” The MAC Book Air, except using the iOS operating system, not OSX system. Also, using the Air’s foot-print with a “supercharged” touch-screen retina-display 12″ iPad within the lid, perhaps removable, and retaining the excellent Air keyboard. The Hinge of this new unit should be 360˚. This configuration would redefine the Laptop forever.
The images displayed are not necessarily authentic; however, may be mock-up images for illustrative purposes of what is described above.

Rumor Viability Comment: Just as the iPad-mini is a huge success, (which may have surprised Apple, possible reason for supply-line shortages) as MANY folks simply wanted a smaller iPad foot-print, MANY folks simply want a bigger iPhone; These folks will continue to go to the competition if Apple continues to ignore the "what millions of their customers want."
